Catching Up - Lassen Park to Mount Shasta Mile 1365 - Mile 1494

To all of those who followed along with the blog, a big thank you to start! As I had mentioned several times it became very difficult to keep it current with the amount of photos I was uploading. I will continue the storyline of the adventure even as I now find myself back in a big city at a coffee shop sipping a cup of joe.

When you were last with me I had reached Lassen Volcano National Park in Northern California and moving with renewed speed and determination after getting through the last of the snow.

South Lake Tahoe to Sierra City - Mile ~1100 to Mile 1195 June 30th to July 6th

After a relaxing stop and a zero day in Tahoe it was time to get back on trail. For miles and multiple days after leaving we still had views of Lake Tahoe in the distance. There was also a good bit of snow travel to contend with especially over Dicks Pass. The last day of this segment marked the end of real snow travel.

Finally made it to Yosemite! A flooded valley on the way to Tuolumne Meadows.

At Tuolumne Meadows, Strider and I decided to hike the road to the town of Lee Vining to stock up with more food for the next section. We talked with a park ranger who strongly encouraged us to reconsider heading north due to the streams between Tuolumne and Sonora Pass being near flood stage. After getting to town and checking my messages, a fellow hiker also warned of the stream crossings and said that he and his partner were jumping ahead to Sonora Pass. With this extra information, we made the decision to do the same and hitched a ride from Lee Vining to Sonora Pass to restart the trail.

The Sierras and the Snow - Part 2 The High Passes

At this point, expected mileage, expected calorie intake and expected dry feet all went out the window!  The strategy enacted was take on one pass per day, climbing it as early in the morning as possible while the snow was still relatively frozen, hike out the snowy miles to the north of the pass, then climb as high up the approach to the next one as possible to restart the process the next morning. Possible daily mileage was reduced by roughly half and typically required about twice the effort as what I had been used to. And of course, I started eating nearly twice what I had in the desert with the extra output.

So, I've broken this post up into each pass crossed beginning with Glen Pass.

The snow quickly loses its charm. After tromping through a little of it on Mount San Jacinto outside Idyllwild i was excited for the mountains. Mountains to Desert Wrightwood to Agua Dulce Mile 371 - 454.5

After a quick trip into Wrightwood for a resupply and a meal I got back on to trail to camp for the night. It was getting dark already so I had to pick a campsite quickly. I cowboy camped on a ridge where I could see the lights of San Bernadino valley on one side of the mountains and the lights of a desert town on the other. During the early morning hours the wind began to gust and made for a cold night of little sleep. I packed up quickly after sunrise and headed to a windless spot in a big pine tree grove for coffee and a hot breakfast to reset my spirit and get ready for a big climb up Mount Baden-Powell.

Big Bear Lake to Wrightwood - Mile 266 - 371

Day 1 - Mile 266 - 276

After a relaxing zero day (zero trail miles) in Big Bear Lake and a great lunch with Shoby's cousin, Ali and his lady Nicole, courtesy of Shoby, I started back on trail where I left off. I was reenergized even carrying the full weight of a resupply and my feet and legs were feeling much healthier. Since it was late in the day I planned for about a half day's distance and got about 10 miles in to a solitary wilderness camp.

Palm Springs to Big Bear Lake - Mile 210 - 266

After a relaxing afternoon and easy morning in Palm Springs, Shoby and I hit the trail Tuesday where I left off on the north side of I-10. Over the next 4 days we hiked through the desert, past a windmill farm, crossed Whitewater Creek and climbed along Mission Creek until the desert floor turned to arroyo then to mountains. We could see snow capped peaks while walking through stands of massive Ponderosa pines and mountain cedar trees. The first day was a modest 10 miles after a relaxed start but each following day was 15-16 miles of hiking with some respectable climbing under the intense Southern California sun.

Due to a fire closure along the trail the 'unofficial alternate route' involved a lot of highway walking to get to Idyllwild. After about 8 miles of it and just before sunset a guy from town pulled over and asked if I wanted a ride into town telling me I had at least another 2-3 hours of walking. With tired feet and a mildly sprained ankle from the day before, I said yes please and thank you.

Day 1, April 28:

Dropped off at the southern terminus monument by trail angel (people along the trail who assist hikers) volunteers, I started the journey northbound. I peered through the wall to Mexico on the other side, signed into the log book and began walking. There was much more water flowing in this stretch than in normal years and so much color from desert blooms.

After hiking around 9 miles out of town with blisters growing increasingly painful, I decided I had to return to Mount Laguna Outfitter and buy a new pair of trail runner shoes with a much larger toe box. I called ahead to see if they had my size and proceeded to bushwhack through brush off trail to the highway which I could see down the hill from my position on the trail. Just before starting to the road I saw my first rattlesnake on the trail who had laid right beside the path and gave me no warning as I approached. He only moved after I took out my phone for a photo. Needless to say, this encounter made crawling through brush off trail a bit disconcerting. I got to the highway, managed to hitch a ride back to town and bought a new pair of shoes and socks and got one of the friendly shop employees to drop me back where I had gotten off trail.

Turn It On Its Head

This is it!  With only a few days left before setting off on a one-way flight to San Diego to begin the Pacific Crest Trail, the reality and scale of this undertaking is palpable.  So much research has gone into trying to prepare for and understand the challenges that lie ahead but the feeling of having so much still to do and to organize is unsettling.

In order to pursue this adventure I am having to walk away from a great job and the security of reliable income, 10 years into my architecture career.  This will be the longest stretch of 'unemployment' I have experienced since I was 14 or 15 years old.  Many of my belongings have been moved into storage and the bill is paid for the next 6 months.  Necessary bills like credit card, phone and accident insurance have been set to autopay and the rest have been cancelled.

In the thick of last minute arrangements, I squeezed in a trip to visit my grandad with my lovely lady and spent time with my aunt, uncle and cousins, all of whom I had not seen in over two years. We camped in style on my family's land, equipped with a four wheeler, a two burner stove and water to spare! My uncle even came and cleared the site with a weed eater and stocked us with fire wood. I don't expect any such luxuries for the next 5 1/2 months.

Tried to get some training in but not near as much as I would've liked.
